Atlas Lion Sailors

Lions ready to roar

Known as the “Atlas Lion Sailors,” in continuity with the Atlas Lions, Morocco is determined to establish itself in the world of competitive sailing. With over 3,500 kilometers of coastline along the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, the Kingdom benefits from exceptional maritime conditions and some of the finest natural sailing waters in the world.

Morocco is increasing its investment in youth development programs, modern training infrastructure, and international competition exposure. As preparations begin for the Olympic campaign toward the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, Moroccan sailors are setting their sights on competing at the highest level.

Participation in global competitions such as the SSL (Star Sailors League) represents more than sport — it symbolizes ambition, resilience, and national pride. Just as Morocco reshaped perceptions in football, it now aims to demonstrate that African excellence can thrive on the oceans as well.

Ready to roar — not only from the Atlas Mountains, but from the open sea.

The captain

Radouane EL HAFRE

International Military Silver Medalist (Livorno, 2014) and double Moroccan National Vice-Champion (ILCA 7, 2006 / ILCA 6, 2013).
As a Federal Coach, he led his team to a triple victory at the 2017 National Championships (Optimist, ILCA 6, and ILCA 4 classes).
Leveraging his elite competitive and coaching background, he currently serves as the Captain of the Moroccan National Sailing Team.

THE LEADERS

Hakim HASNI

Hakim Hasni is and experienced sailor specializing in dinghy classes, former member of the Moroccan National Sailing Team in ILCA 6 and ILCA 7. Strong international competition background combined with active involvement in sailing governance and technical committees in Morocco.

Marouane Hasni

Marounane Hasni started sailing in the Optimist class at the age of 9. He took part in many national regattas and won several competitions.
In 1997, at the age of 17, he participated in his first ILCA World Championship, which was organized in his home country. This championship was a real turning point for him and motivated him to work even harder.
He then continued his ILCA career by competing in several national and international regattas. He was also a member of the national team, benefiting from numerous training camps and guidance from excellent coaches.
Later on, he started sailing keelboats while continuing to compete in the ILCA Master category

Abdessamad Saoud

Abdessamad Saoud has been sailing for more than 20 years. He specializes in different categories of keelboats and has participated in numerous national and international competitions in this discipline.
He is currently a coach and instructor at his club’s sailing school.

THE YOUTH FACTOR

Morocco is highly active in preparing young sailors, particularly in view of the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, through the selection of two young athletes who will represent Morocco in the BIC Techno 293 series.

The city of Tangier hosted, from May 4 to 9, 2026, the third international training camp for the BIC Techno 293 category, organized under the supervision of World Sailing, as part of the development of youth windsurfing.

This sporting event brought together seven African and Arab countries:
🇲🇦 Morocco, 🇩🇿 Algeria, 🇹🇳 Tunisia, 🇪🇬 Egypt, 🇿🇦 South Africa, 🇦🇴 Angola, and 🇲🇬 Madagascar, with the participation of 12 young athletes representing some of the most promising emerging talents in the discipline.

This gathering is part of the preparations for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, aiming to strengthen the athletes’ technical and physical readiness and further develop their skills ahead of this major international sporting event.
